A-Cold Syrup 4 mg/5 ml contains Bromhexine Hydrochloride, a mucolytic and expectorant agent used in the management of productive cough associated with respiratory tract disorders. It works by reducing the viscosity of thick mucus, making it easier to cough out and thereby improving airway clearance. A-Cold Syrup is suitable for both adults and children and is commonly prescribed in conditions involving excessive or sticky respiratory secretions.

A-Cold Syrup 4 mg/5 ml is indicated for the treatment of respiratory conditions associated with abnormal mucus secretion, including:
Productive cough
Acute and chronic bronchitis
Tracheobronchitis
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
Bronchial asthma with mucus plugging
Upper and lower respiratory tract infections with thick sputum
By loosening mucus, the syrup helps relieve chest congestion and improves breathing comfort.
Mucolytics and expectorants
Bromhexine Hydrochloride is a synthetic derivative of the herbal compound vasicine. It acts by depolymerizing mucopolysaccharide fibers in mucus, resulting in reduced sputum viscosity. This facilitates expectoration and enhances mucociliary clearance from the respiratory tract.
Bromhexine also stimulates the production of serous secretions in the respiratory tract, which further dilutes thick mucus. Improved mucus clearance helps reduce coughing frequency and supports faster recovery from respiratory infections. After oral administration, bromhexine is well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and distributed to lung tissue, where it exerts its therapeutic effect.
A-Cold Syrup works by breaking down thick and sticky mucus in the airways, making it thinner and easier to expel. This action helps clear blocked airways, reduces chest congestion, and supports normal breathing.
Dosage depends on age and severity of symptoms:
Adults: 5–10 ml, two to three times daily
Children: Dose adjusted according to age and body weight, as prescribed by a physician
The syrup should be taken after meals with adequate fluid intake to enhance the mucolytic effect.
Bromhexine may increase the penetration of certain antibiotics such as amoxicillin, erythromycin, and doxycycline into bronchial secretions, which may enhance their therapeutic effect. No significant adverse drug interactions have been commonly reported.
A-Cold Syrup is contraindicated in patients with:
Known hypersensitivity to bromhexine or any component of the formulation
Active peptic ulcer disease
Caution is advised in patients with severe hepatic or renal impairment.
