Colasa Suppository 1 gm contains Mesalazine (5-Aminosalicylic Acid) 1 gram, an anti-inflammatory medication specifically formulated for rectal administration. It is used in the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases, particularly ulcerative colitis affecting the rectum and lower part of the colon. The suppository form allows direct delivery of the active ingredient to the site of inflammation, ensuring targeted and effective relief.
Mesalazine belongs to the aminosalicylate group of medicines. It works locally on the intestinal lining to reduce inflammation, swelling, redness, and irritation. By inhibiting the production of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes, mesalazine helps control symptoms and promotes healing of the intestinal mucosa.
Colasa Suppository 1 gm is especially beneficial for patients with mild to moderate ulcerative proctitis and proctosigmoiditis, where inflammation is limited to the rectal area. Direct rectal administration provides high local drug concentration with minimal systemic absorption, thereby reducing the risk of systemic side effects.

Mesalazine acts topically on the inflamed intestinal mucosa. It inhibits cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways, reducing the formation of inflammatory chemicals in the colon. This leads to decreased inflammation, improved mucosal integrity, and relief from symptoms such as diarrhea, rectal bleeding, and abdominal discomfort.
The usual recommended dose is one suppository (1 gm) inserted rectally once daily at bedtime or as directed by a physician. The suppository should be inserted deeply into the rectum after bowel movement for optimal effect. Patients are advised to lie down for a few minutes after insertion to prevent expulsion.
The duration of therapy depends on the severity of the condition and clinical response. For maintenance therapy, long-term use may be recommended under medical supervision.
