Flurazine Tablet 5 mg contains Trifluoperazine, a potent antipsychotic medication belonging to the phenothiazine group. It is primarily used in the management of psychotic disorders and severe anxiety states. Flurazine Tablet 5 mg works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural substances in the brain, thereby reducing symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, agitation, and anxiety. Due to its effectiveness, it is widely prescribed under careful medical supervision for both psychiatric and certain non-psychotic conditions.

Flurazine Tablet 5 mg is indicated for the treatment of:
Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders
Severe anxiety and tension, particularly when accompanied by agitation
Short-term management of anxiety disorders when other treatments are ineffective
Antipsychotics (Phenothiazines)
Trifluoperazine is a typical antipsychotic agent that exerts its effect mainly by blocking dopamine (D₂) receptors in the brain, particularly in the mesolimbic pathway. This dopamine antagonism helps reduce psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking.
In addition to its antipsychotic action, Trifluoperazine has antiemetic and mild sedative properties. Compared to some other phenothiazines, it has relatively lower sedative and anticholinergic effects but a higher propensity to cause extrapyramidal symptoms, especially at higher doses or with long-term use.
Flurazine Tablet 5 mg should be taken orally as directed by a physician. Dosage is individualized based on the patient’s condition, response to treatment, and tolerance.
Adults:
Psychotic disorders: Initial doses are usually low and gradually increased depending on clinical response
Anxiety: Lower doses are typically sufficient for short-term use
Elderly:
Treatment should start at the lowest possible dose due to increased sensitivity to side effects
Pediatric Use:
Dosage and safety depend on age and clinical indication and should be determined strictly by a specialist
Abrupt discontinuation should be avoided unless advised by a healthcare professional.
Flurazine Tablet 5 mg may interact with central nervous system depressants such as alcohol, sedatives, hypnotics, and opioid analgesics, leading to enhanced sedation and respiratory depression. Concomitant use with antihypertensive drugs may increase the risk of hypotension. Use with other dopamine antagonists, antiparkinsonian drugs, or medications that prolong the QT interval requires caution and close monitoring.
Flurazine Tablet 5 mg is contraindicated in patients with:
Known hypersensitivity to Trifluoperazine or other phenothiazines
Comatose states or severe central nervous system depression
Bone marrow depression
Pheochromocytoma
Common side effects include:
Drowsiness
Dizziness
Dry mouth
Blurred vision
More serious adverse reactions may include:
Extrapyramidal symptoms such as tremor, rigidity, dystonia, and akathisia
Tardive dyskinesia with long-term use
Orthostatic hypotension
Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (rare but serious)
The safety of Trifluoperazine during pregnancy has not been fully established. It should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the possible risk. Trifluoperazine may be excreted in breast milk; therefore, caution is advised when administered to nursing mothers.
Caution is required in patients with cardiovascular disease, liver impairment, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, or a history of blood dyscrasias. Long-term therapy requires regular clinical evaluation to monitor for movement disorders and other adverse effects. Patients should be advised to avoid alcohol and activities requiring mental alertness until their response to the medication is known.
