Mechanism of Action

Ketotifen has a dual mechanism of action:

2. Mast Cell Stabilizing Action: Ketotifen inhibits the release of inflammatory mediators such as histamine, leukotrienes, and other substances from mast cells. This action helps prevent allergic reactions before they fully develop.

Because of this combined action, Ketifen Tablet is particularly useful for long-term prevention of allergic symptoms and asthma attacks rather than immediate relief of acute asthma.

Indications

Ketifen Tablet 1 mg is indicated for:

• Prophylactic treatment of bronchial asthma

• Allergic rhinitis (seasonal and perennial)

• Allergic conjunctivitis

• Chronic urticaria (hives)

• Other allergic skin conditions

It is not intended for the treatment of acute asthma attacks.

Dosage and Administration

The usual adult dose is 1 mg twice daily, preferably taken with meals to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort. In some cases, treatment may begin with a lower dose (such as 0.5 mg twice daily) to reduce initial sedation, then gradually increased to the full dose.
