Lamogin 5 mg contains Lamotrigine, an antiepileptic drug used for the management of epilepsy and bipolar disorder. It is primarily indicated for partial-onset seizures, generalized tonic-clonic seizures, and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome in adults and pediatric patients. Lamotrigine is also approved as a mood stabilizer for the maintenance treatment of bipolar disorder, particularly for the prevention of depressive episodes. Lamogin is valued for its efficacy, tolerability, and relatively low risk of sedation and cognitive impairment compared to other anticonvulsants.

Antiepileptic / Mood Stabilizer
Lamotrigine works by inhibiting voltage-sensitive sodium channels, stabilizing neuronal membranes, and modulating the release of excitatory neurotransmitters such as glutamate and aspartate. This action helps prevent repetitive neuronal firing and reduces seizure activity.
Pharmacokinetic properties include:
Rapid oral absorption, with peak plasma concentration occurring within 1–3 hours
Bioavailability of approximately 98%
Protein binding: ~55%
Metabolism: Primarily hepatic via glucuronidation
Elimination half-life: Approximately 25–33 hours in adults, shorter in children and longer when co-administered with valproate
Excretion is mainly renal (glucuronide metabolites)
Lamotrigine has minimal sedative effects and a low risk of cognitive impairment, making it suitable for long-term therapy in both seizure management and mood stabilization.
Lamogin Tablet 5 mg is indicated for:
Partial-onset seizures in adults and children
Generalized tonic-clonic seizures
Seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome
Maintenance therapy in bipolar disorder to prevent depressive episodes
Adults (Seizures):
Initial dose: 25 mg once daily for 2 weeks
Gradually titrate every 1–2 weeks to a maintenance dose of 100–200 mg/day in divided doses
Maximum recommended dose: 500 mg/day, depending on co-administration with other antiepileptics
Pediatric Patients (≥2 years):
Dose depends on body weight and concomitant medications
Start with 0.15–0.2 mg/kg/day and gradually titrate
Bipolar Disorder:
Start at 25 mg daily, titrate gradually over 5–6 weeks
Target maintenance dose: 200 mg/day (or 400 mg/day if co-administered with enzyme-inducing drugs)
Administration Notes:
Tablets should be taken orally with or without food
Do not discontinue abruptly, as this may precipitate seizures
Gradual titration reduces the risk of severe skin reactions
Known hypersensitivity to lamotrigine or any excipients
History of serious skin reactions to lamotrigine
Common side effects include:
Dizziness, headache, and somnolence
Nausea, vomiting, and gastrointestinal upset
Rash (mild to moderate) – severe rash may indicate Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis
Ataxia, tremor, and blurred vision
Rarely, hematologic abnormalities and liver dysfunction
Skin reactions are more likely during initial titration or rapid dose escalation
Use with caution in patients with hepatic or renal impairment
Monitor for signs of suicidal ideation, especially in patients with mood disorders
Lamotrigine is Pregnancy Category C
Should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed, with careful monitoring
Lamotrigine is excreted in breast milk; caution is advised during breastfeeding
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Lamotrigine stabilizes neuronal membranes by selectively inhibiting sodium channels and reducing excitatory neurotransmitter release, thereby controlling seizures and preventing mood destabilization in bipolar disorder.
