Lemodip Tablet 2.5 mg contains Levamlodipine Maleate, the pharmacologically active S-enantiomer of amlodipine. It is a long-acting calcium channel blocker used primarily in the management of hypertension and certain forms of angina pectoris. By offering effective blood pressure control at a lower dose, Lemodip helps reduce cardiovascular risk while improving patient tolerability.

Calcium Channel Blocker (Dihydropyridine)
Levamlodipine selectively inhibits the influx of calcium ions through L-type calcium channels in vascular smooth muscle cells. Calcium ions are essential for muscle contraction; by blocking their entry, Levamlodipine causes relaxation of peripheral arterioles. This results in reduced peripheral vascular resistance, leading to a gradual and sustained lowering of blood pressure.
Compared to racemic amlodipine, Levamlodipine provides similar antihypertensive efficacy at approximately half the dose, potentially reducing dose-related adverse effects such as peripheral edema.
Pharmacokinetic properties include:
Absorption: Well absorbed following oral administration
Bioavailability: High, with minimal first-pass metabolism
Time to peak concentration: 6–12 hours
Protein binding: Approximately 98%
Metabolism: Extensively metabolized in the liver
Elimination half-life: Long, around 30–50 hours
Excretion: Primarily via urine as inactive metabolites
Lemodip Tablet 2.5 mg is indicated for the treatment of:
Essential hypertension (as monotherapy or in combination with other antihypertensive agents)
Chronic stable angina pectoris
Vasospastic (Prinzmetal’s) angina
Effective blood pressure control helps reduce the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, and other cardiovascular complications.
Adults: The usual starting dose is 2.5 mg once daily
Dose may be adjusted based on patient response and clinical condition
Tablets should be taken orally with water, with or without food
Once-daily dosing improves patient compliance
Special Populations:
Elderly patients or those with hepatic impairment may require cautious dose adjustment
Not recommended for use in children unless advised by a physician
Known hypersensitivity to Levamlodipine, Amlodipine, or other dihydropyridine derivatives
Severe hypotension
Cardiogenic shock
Lemodip is generally well tolerated. Commonly reported side effects include:
Headache
Dizziness
Flushing
Peripheral edema
Fatigue
Less common effects may include palpitations, abdominal discomfort, or nausea.
Use with caution in patients with severe hepatic impairment
Blood pressure should be monitored regularly during therapy
Sudden discontinuation should be avoided without medical advice
Levamlodipine may be safely used with most antihypertensive agents. Caution is advised when co-administered with drugs that significantly affect blood pressure or hepatic metabolism.
Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed and prescribed by a physician
Caution is advised during breastfeeding, as small amounts may be excreted in breast milk
Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Lemodip Tablet 2.5 mg lowers blood pressure by selectively blocking calcium entry into vascular smooth muscle, resulting in vasodilation, reduced vascular resistance, and improved cardiac workload without significantly affecting heart rate.
