Valex CR Tablet 200 mg is a controlled-release formulation of Sodium Valproate, developed to provide long-lasting antiepileptic effects with reduced gastrointestinal side effects and convenient once or twice-daily dosing. Sodium Valproate is a broad-spectrum antiepileptic drug that works by enhancing gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) activity, the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. By increasing GABA levels, Valex CR stabilizes neuronal firing and helps prevent seizures.
The controlled-release (CR) technology ensures steady plasma drug levels, minimizing fluctuations and reducing the risk of breakthrough seizures. Valex CR is ideal for adults and children who require consistent seizure control and prefer a simpler dosing regimen. It is also indicated for bipolar disorder and migraine prophylaxis.

Primary Anti-Epileptic Drugs
Valex CR Tablet 200 mg is indicated for:
Epilepsy:
Partial seizures
Absence seizures (petit mal)
Generalized tonic-clonic seizures (grand mal)
Myoclonic seizures
Atonic seizures
Mixed seizures including absence attacks
Prophylaxis of febrile convulsions
Prophylaxis of post-traumatic epilepsy
Bipolar disorder (mood stabilization)
Prophylaxis of migraine
The CR formulation is particularly suitable for patients who benefit from stable blood levels and reduced gastrointestinal irritation.
Sodium Valproate in Valex CR works by increasing GABA concentrations in the brain, which enhances inhibitory neurotransmission and reduces neuronal hyperexcitability. This action helps control seizures across multiple types of epilepsy.
Pharmacokinetics:
Absorption: CR formulation ensures gradual drug release for steady plasma levels
Metabolism: Primarily hepatic
Excretion: Partially in urine
Half-life: 9–16 hours in adults; may vary in children
Adults:
Initial dose: 600 mg/day in 1–2 divided doses after food
Titration: Increase by 200 mg/day every 3 days as needed
Maintenance: 1–2 g/day (20–30 mg/kg/day), up to 2.5 g/day
Children:
Up to 20 kg: 20 mg/kg/day in divided doses
Over 20 kg: Initial 400 mg/day, titrated up to 20–35 mg/kg/day
Special Uses:
Febrile convulsions: 20–30 mg/kg/day in 3 divided doses
Bipolar disorder: 600 mg/day initially, maintenance 1–2 g/day
Migraine prophylaxis: 400–600 mg/day
Administration Tips:
Swallow CR tablets whole; do not crush or chew
Take with food to reduce gastrointestinal discomfort
Valex CR may interfere with drug metabolism, affecting:
Phenobarbital
Phenytoin
Warfarin
Aspirin
Close monitoring may be required to avoid adverse reactions.
Known hypersensitivity to Sodium Valproate
Liver dysfunction
Pregnancy or women of childbearing potential unless necessary
Common side effects include:
Gastrointestinal: nausea, vomiting, anorexia (less frequent than immediate-release forms)
CNS: sedation, tremor, ataxia
Dermatologic: rash, alopecia
Rare: hepatic injury, pancreatitis, hyperammonemia
Routine monitoring of liver function and plasma levels is recommended.
Avoid sudden discontinuation to prevent seizure recurrence
Monitor liver function during the first 6 months
Adjust dosing in renal impairment
Avoid use in systemic lupus erythematosus
Crosses the placenta; exposure in the first trimester may cause neural tube defects
Excreted in breast milk; caution advised
Store below 30°C, away from light
Keep out of reach of children
Valex CR increases GABA levels in the brain, enhancing inhibitory neurotransmission, stabilizing neuronal firing, and effectively controlling multiple types of seizures.
