Valex CR Tablet 500 mg is a controlled-release formulation of Sodium Valproate, designed for the long-term management of epilepsy, bipolar disorder, and migraine prophylaxis. Its controlled-release mechanism ensures steady plasma levels, reducing the need for frequent dosing and minimizing gastrointestinal irritation compared to immediate-release formulations.
Valex CR 500 mg is effective in controlling all types of seizures, including partial, generalized tonic-clonic, absence, myoclonic, and atonic seizures. It is also used for prophylaxis of febrile convulsions, post-traumatic epilepsy, and for stabilizing mood in bipolar disorder, as well as preventing migraine attacks.
The medication acts by increasing gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels in the brain, enhancing inhibitory neurotransmission, stabilizing neuronal firing, and preventing abnormal electrical activity in the central nervous system.

Partial seizures
Generalized tonic-clonic seizures (grand mal)
Absence seizures (petit mal)
Myoclonic and atonic seizures
Mixed seizures including absence attacks
Prophylaxis of febrile convulsions
Post-traumatic epilepsy
Bipolar disorder (mood stabilization)
Prophylaxis of migraine
Sodium Valproate in Valex CR Tablet enhances GABAergic activity, stabilizing neuronal excitability and suppressing abnormal electrical discharges responsible for seizures.
Pharmacokinetics of CR formulation:
Provides sustained plasma levels
Slower absorption reduces peak-trough fluctuations
Metabolized in the liver; partially excreted via urine
Half-life: 9–16 hours, allowing once- or twice-daily dosing
Adults:
Initial: 600 mg/day in divided doses, preferably after food
Titration: Increase by 200 mg/day every 3 days if required
Maintenance: 1–2 g/day in divided doses (20–30 mg/kg/day)
Children (up to 20 kg):
Initial: 20 mg/kg/day in divided doses
Increased gradually based on response and plasma levels
Children (over 20 kg):
Initial: 400 mg/day in divided doses
Maintenance: 20–30 mg/kg/day
Bipolar disorder:
Initial: 600 mg/day in 2–3 divided doses
Maintenance: 1–2 g/day
Migraine prophylaxis:

Monitoring: Liver function tests, plasma levels, and coagulation profiles are recommended during therapy.
Avoid abrupt discontinuation
Adjust dose in renal impairment
Monitor in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, pregnancy, or breastfeeding
