The medication is effective against common pathogens such as Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Haemophilus influenzae, and Neisseria species. Use should be based on clinical evaluation and, where possible, bacteriological evidence.
Chloramphenicol acts by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It binds to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, preventing the formation of peptide bonds and thereby stopping bacterial growth and replication.
By interfering with protein synthesis, Chloramphenicol effectively controls the spread of infection and allows the body’s immune system to eliminate the bacteria. Its broad-spectrum activity makes A-Phenicol Eye Drop suitable for treating mixed or unidentified bacterial eye infections.
A-Phenicol Eye Drop 0.50% should be used exactly as prescribed by a healthcare professional. The usual practice involves instilling the recommended number of drops into the affected eye(s) at specified intervals.
Before application, hands should be washed thoroughly. Care should be taken to avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye or surrounding surfaces to prevent contamination. Treatment should be continued for the full prescribed duration, even if symptoms improve earlier, to ensure complete eradication of the infection.
Not recommended for patients with known hypersensitivity to Chloramphenicol.
Prolonged or repeated use may increase the risk of secondary infections caused by non-susceptible organisms.
Use with caution in patients with a history of blood disorders, as rare systemic effects have been reported with prolonged use.
Contact lenses should generally be avoided during treatment unless advised otherwise by a healthcare professional.
A-Phenicol Eye Drop is generally well tolerated. Possible side effects may include:
Mild eye irritation or burning sensation
Temporary blurred vision after application
Allergic reactions such as redness or itching
If severe irritation, persistent symptoms, or signs of hypersensitivity occur, discontinue use and seek medical advice promptly.
