Aprocin Suspension 250 mg/5 ml contains Ciprofloxacin, a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. It is effective against many Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria and is commonly prescribed for infections of the urinary tract, respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, skin, soft tissues, bones, joints, and certain other susceptible bacterial infections.
Ciprofloxacin works by inhibiting the bacterial enzymes DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV, which are essential for bacterial DNA replication, repair, and cell division. By disrupting these vital processes, it stops bacterial growth and leads to the elimination of the infection. Since it acts only against bacteria, it is not effective against viral infections such as the common cold or influenza.
The oral suspension formulation is particularly suitable for children (when clinically appropriate) and adults who have difficulty swallowing tablets. The dose is determined based on the patient's age, body weight, type and severity of infection, and kidney function. To ensure complete eradication of the infection and reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance, the full prescribed course should be completed even if symptoms improve before treatment ends.
