Azithrocin Tablet 500 mg is indicated for infections caused by susceptible microorganisms. It is commonly prescribed for upper respiratory tract infections such as sinusitis, pharyngitis, and tonsillitis. It is also effective in lower respiratory tract infections including acute bronchitis and community-acquired pneumonia.
Additionally, Azithrocin 500 mg is used to treat otitis media (middle ear infection), skin and soft tissue infections, and certain sexually transmitted infections. It is recommended for the treatment of non-gonococcal urethritis and cervicitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. The drug may also be used in some cases of typhoid fever and other infections as advised by a physician.
Azithromycin belongs to the azalide subgroup of macrolide antibiotics. It exerts its antibacterial effect by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis and preventing bacterial growth.
Azithrocin 500 mg shows activity against a wide range of organisms including Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Legionella pneumophila, and Bordetella pertussis. Its high tissue concentration contributes to sustained antibacterial activity even after therapy is completed.
Adults:
The usual dose is 500 mg once daily for 3 days, or 500 mg on day 1 followed by 250 mg once daily on days 2 to 5, depending on the type and severity of infection. For certain sexually transmitted infections, a single dose of 1 g may be prescribed.
Azithrocin Tablet 500 mg should be taken at least one hour before or two hours after meals for optimal absorption, unless otherwise directed by a healthcare professional.
Food and antacids containing aluminum or magnesium may reduce the absorption of azithromycin. Concomitant use with ergot derivatives is contraindicated due to the risk of ergotism. Caution is advised when co-administered with digoxin or cyclosporine, as serum levels may increase.
