Indications

Azmasol Respirator Solution 5 mg/ml is indicated for:

• Relief of acute bronchospasm in bronchial asthma

• Management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis and emphysema

• Prevention and treatment of exercise-induced bronchospasm

• Treatment of reversible airway obstruction associated with other obstructive airway diseases

It is suitable for use in emergency settings as well as for regular maintenance therapy under medical supervision.

Pharmacology

Salbutamol is a selective β2-adrenergic receptor agonist. When inhaled via nebulization, it acts directly on bronchial smooth muscle, stimulating β2 receptors and causing muscle relaxation. This leads to bronchodilation and improved airflow.

Salbutamol has minimal action on β1 receptors at recommended doses, reducing the risk of unwanted cardiac effects. The onset of action is rapid, usually within minutes, and the bronchodilator effect typically lasts for 4 to 6 hours. Due to inhalational delivery, high local concentrations are achieved in the lungs with relatively low systemic exposure.

Dosage and Administration

Adults and Elderly:
2.5–5 mg (0.5–1 ml) diluted with normal saline to a suitable volume, administered via nebulizer up to 3–4 times daily or as directed by the physician.

Children:
2.5 mg (0.5 ml) diluted with normal saline, administered via nebulizer as prescribed.

Dosage and frequency should be adjusted according to the severity of the condition and patient response. Azmasol Respirator Solution should only be used with appropriate nebulizing equipment.

Drug Interactions

Concurrent use with non-selective beta-blockers may reduce the bronchodilating effect of salbutamol. Caution is advised when used with other sympathomimetic drugs, diuretics, or xanthine derivatives, as these may increase the risk of hypokalemia. Use with monoamine oxidase inhibitors or tricyclic antidepressants should be carefully monitored.

Contraindications

Azmasol Respirator Solution is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to salbutamol or any of its components. It should be used with caution in patients with cardiovascular disorders, hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus, or a history of arrhythmias.

Side Effects

Pregnancy & Lactation

Salbutamol should be used during pregnancy only if the expected benefit outweighs the potential risk. Caution is advised when administering to breastfeeding mothers, as small amounts may be excreted in breast milk.
