Mupirocin 2% w/w
Topical antibacterial (antibiotic)
Bactrobex Ointment 2% w/w is indicated for the treatment of:
Impetigo
Infected cuts, wounds, and abrasions
Folliculitis
Secondary bacterial infections of eczema or dermatitis
Minor skin infections caused by susceptible bacteria
Mupirocin is a naturally derived antibiotic that acts by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It specifically binds to bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase, an enzyme essential for protein production. This unique mechanism of action results in effective bacteriostatic or bactericidal activity, depending on drug concentration and bacterial susceptibility.
Due to its distinctive mode of action, Mupirocin shows minimal cross-resistance with other antibiotics, making it effective against strains resistant to commonly used antibacterial agents. When applied topically, systemic absorption is negligible, and any absorbed drug is rapidly metabolized to inactive monic acid.
Bactrobex Ointment is for topical use only.
Apply a small amount to the affected area two to three times daily, or as directed by a physician
The treated area may be covered with a sterile dressing if required
Treatment duration is usually up to 10 days, depending on the severity of infection
Hands should be washed before and after application to prevent contamination and spread of infection.
Bactrobex Ointment 2% w/w is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Mupirocin or any component of the formulation.
Bactrobex Ointment is generally well tolerated. Possible side effects include:
Burning or stinging sensation at the application site
Itching or redness
Dryness of skin
Local irritation
Allergic reactions are rare but may occur. Treatment should be discontinued if severe irritation or hypersensitivity develops.
Avoid contact with eyes, nose, mouth, and mucous membranes
Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi
Do not use on large areas of damaged skin unless advised by a physician
If no clinical improvement is observed within 3–5 days, medical advice should be sought
Bactrobex Ointment should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. It is not known whether Mupirocin is excreted in human milk; caution is advised when used by breastfeeding mothers, especially if applied to large skin areas.
Store below 25–30°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Mupirocin exerts its antibacterial effect by selectively inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, leading to the elimination of susceptible bacteria at the site of infection and promoting healing of infected skin.
