Betaxol Eye Drop 0.5% contains Betaxolol Hydrochloride, a selective beta₁-adrenergic receptor blocker (beta-blocker) used to reduce elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. By lowering pressure inside the eye, Betaxol helps protect the optic nerve from damage and reduces the risk of progressive vision loss associated with glaucoma.

Betaxolol works by decreasing the production of aqueous humor, the clear fluid inside the eye. Reduced aqueous humor production leads to lower intraocular pressure without significantly affecting pupil size or visual accommodation. Maintaining normal eye pressure is essential for preserving vision and preventing glaucoma-related complications.

As a selective beta₁-blocker, Betaxolol generally has less effect on the lungs than non-selective ophthalmic beta-blockers, although caution is still necessary in patients with respiratory or cardiovascular diseases. Betaxol Eye Drop is intended for regular, long-term use under the supervision of an ophthalmologist and should be used consistently, even when no symptoms are present, since glaucoma often progresses without noticeable signs.

Indications

Betaxol Eye Drop 0.5% is indicated for:

  • Open-angle glaucoma
  • Ocular hypertension (elevated intraocular pressure)
  • Long-term reduction of intraocular pressure
  • Prevention of optic nerve damage associated with glaucoma

How Betaxol Eye Drop Works

Betaxolol Hydrochloride is a selective beta₁-adrenergic receptor blocker that reduces the production of aqueous humor by the ciliary body of the eye. This lowers intraocular pressure, helping protect the optic nerve and preserve vision in patients with glaucoma or ocular hypertension.

Benefits of Betaxol Eye Drop

  • Effectively lowers elevated intraocular pressure.
  • Helps protect the optic nerve from glaucoma-related damage.
  • Reduces the risk of progressive vision loss.
  • Selective beta₁-blocking action with less effect on the respiratory system compared to non-selective beta-blockers.
  • Suitable for long-term glaucoma management under medical supervision.
  • Convenient topical administration directly to the eye.

Dosage and Administration

Use Betaxol Eye Drop 0.5% exactly as prescribed by your ophthalmologist.

  • Wash your hands before applying the eye drops.
  • Instill the prescribed number of drops into the affected eye(s).
  • Avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye or any surface to prevent contamination.
  • Close your eyes gently for 1–2 minutes after instillation. Applying gentle pressure to the inner corner of the eye (nasolacrimal occlusion) for about one minute may help reduce systemic absorption.
  • If using other eye medications, wait at least 5–10 minutes between applications.

Do not discontinue treatment without consulting your healthcare provider, as uncontrolled intraocular pressure may lead to permanent vision damage.

Possible Side Effects

Like all medicines, Betaxol Eye Drop may cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them.

Common side effects include:

  • Temporary burning or stinging after application
  • Eye discomfort
  • Blurred vision immediately after instillation
