Dexochol 300 mg Capsule contains Ursodeoxycholic Acid (UDCA), a naturally occurring bile acid used in the treatment of various hepatobiliary disorders. It is widely prescribed for conditions associated with cholestasis, liver dysfunction, and cholesterol gallstones.
Dexochol works by improving bile flow, reducing cholesterol saturation in bile, and protecting liver cells from bile acid–induced injury. It is an effective therapeutic option in both acute and chronic liver conditions, helping restore liver function and reduce complications associated with impaired bile secretion.

Anti-gallstones drugs: Bile Acids
Ursodeoxycholic Acid in Dexochol 300 mg reduces cholesterol concentration in bile and alters bile composition from supersaturated to unsaturated, promoting gallstone dissolution. Its mechanism of action includes:
Reducing intestinal absorption of cholesterol
Suppressing hepatic cholesterol synthesis
Promoting formation of liquid cholesterol crystal complexes, facilitating removal of cholesterol from the gallbladder
Protecting cholangiocytes against the cytotoxic effects of hydrophobic bile acids
Stimulating hepatobiliary secretion
Protecting hepatocytes from bile acid-induced apoptosis
Dexochol is completely absorbed in the upper intestine, reaching peak serum concentration within 30–150 minutes. Approximately 60–80% is absorbed and extracted by the liver via the portal vein. It is conjugated with glycine or taurine and secreted into bile ducts. The biological half-life ranges from 3.5 to 5.8 days. Only small amounts are excreted in urine.
Dexochol 300 mg is indicated for the treatment of:
Cholestasis (Jaundice)
Acute Viral Hepatitis
Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease
Primary Biliary Cirrhosis (PBC)
Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC)
Dissolution of cholesterol gallstones
Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH)
Dosage depends on the condition being treated:
Gallstone dissolution: 8–12 mg/kg/day (single nighttime dose or divided doses)
Primary Biliary Cirrhosis (PBC): 10–15 mg/kg/day in 2–4 divided doses
Acute Viral Hepatitis: 600 mg/day
Alcoholic Fatty Liver: 300 mg/day
Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC): 25–30 mg/kg/day
Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH): 13–15 mg/kg/day
Dosage should be individualized based on body weight and clinical response, under physician supervision.
Dexochol 300 mg should not be used with:
Oestrogenic hormones, which increase bile cholesterol
Bile acid-binding agents such as cholestyramine, antacids containing aluminum, and activated charcoal, as they reduce UDCA absorption and effectiveness
Non-functioning gallbladder
Calcified or pigmented gallstones
Inflammatory bowel disease
Hypersensitivity to Ursodeoxycholic Acid
Common side effects may include:
Nausea
Vomiting
Diarrhoea
Pruritus
Gallstone opacification
These effects are generally mild and reversible upon discontinuation.
