Efitaz Injection is a broad-spectrum antibiotic combination containing piperacillin (4 g) and tazobactam (0.5 g). It is used for the treatment of moderate to severe bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms. This combination enhances antibacterial activity and helps combat infections caused by resistant bacteria.

Broad-spectrum Penicillin Antibiotic
Beta-lactamase Inhibitor Combination
Each vial contains:
Piperacillin 4 g
Tazobactam 0.5 g
Efitaz Injection is indicated for the treatment of various bacterial infections, including:
Lower respiratory tract infections (including pneumonia)
Urinary tract infections (complicated and uncomplicated)
Intra-abdominal infections
Skin and soft tissue infections
Gynecological infections
Septicemia (bloodstream infections)
Bone and joint infections
Febrile neutropenia
It is commonly used in hospital settings for serious infections where broad-spectrum coverage is required.
Piperacillin is an extended-spectrum ureidopenicillin antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to disruption of cell wall formation and bacterial cell death.
Tazobactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Many bacteria produce beta-lactamase enzymes that can inactivate penicillin antibiotics. Tazobactam protects piperacillin by inhibiting these enzymes, thereby extending its spectrum of activity against beta-lactamase–producing organisms.
Together, this combination provides coverage against:
Gram-positive bacteria
Gram-negative bacteria (including Pseudomonas aeruginosa)
Anaerobic organisms
The dosage depends on the severity and type of infection, renal function, and patient condition.
Adults:
Usual dose: 4.5 g (4 g piperacillin + 0.5 g tazobactam) every 6–8 hours via intravenous infusion.
Pediatric patients:
Dosage is calculated based on body weight.
In patients with renal impairment, dose adjustment is required.
Efitaz Injection is administered intravenously either by slow injection or infusion after proper reconstitution and dilution according to recommended guidelines.
Efitaz Injection is contraindicated in patients with:
Known hypersensitivity to piperacillin, tazobactam, penicillins, cephalosporins, or other beta-lactam antibiotics
History of severe allergic reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis) to beta-lactam antibiotics
Common side effects include:
Diarrhea
Nausea and vomiting
Rash
Fever
Injection site reactions
Less common but serious side effects:
Hypersensitivity reactions (anaphylaxis)
Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea
Thrombocytopenia or leukopenia
Elevated liver enzymes
Electrolyte imbalance (especially hypokalemia)
Patients should be monitored during therapy, especially in prolonged treatment.

Probenecid may increase piperacillin levels.
Concomitant use with anticoagulants may affect coagulation parameters.
May interact with neuromuscular blocking agents.
Caution when used with other nephrotoxic drugs.
Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Piperacillin is excreted in breast milk in small amounts. Caution should be exercised when administered to breastfeeding mothers.
Use cautiously in patients with renal impairment (dose adjustment required).
Monitor renal, hepatic, and hematologic function during prolonged therapy.
Discontinue if severe allergic reaction occurs.
Prolonged use may result in superinfection with resistant organisms.
