Efodio Suspension 5 mg/5 ml contains Domperidone Maleate, a potent dopamine D2 receptor antagonist. It is primarily used for gastrointestinal disorders, helping to relieve nausea, vomiting, bloating, and delayed gastric emptying. This oral suspension formulation is particularly suitable for children and adults who have difficulty swallowing tablets.
Domperidone works by increasing gastrointestinal motility and accelerating gastric emptying, while also reducing nausea signals from the stomach to the brain. Unlike other antiemetics, it does not cross the blood-brain barrier significantly, minimizing central nervous system side effects.

Dopamine D2 receptor antagonist
Efodio’s active ingredient, Domperidone, selectively blocks dopamine D2 receptors in the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ) of the brain and gastrointestinal tract. This action helps in:
Suppressing nausea and vomiting – Domperidone prevents stimulation of the vomiting center in the brain.
Enhancing gastric motility – It improves the movement of the stomach and intestines, facilitating digestion and reducing bloating.
Increasing esophageal and gastric peristalsis – This ensures timely movement of food from the stomach to the intestines.
Minimal central effects – Domperidone has limited penetration into the central nervous system, reducing the risk of sedation and neurological side effects.
After oral administration, Domperidone is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, reaching peak plasma concentrations within 30–60 minutes. The drug is metabolized mainly in the liver and excreted primarily in urine and feces.
Efodio Suspension 5 mg/5 ml is indicated for:
Nausea and vomiting caused by various conditions, including gastroenteritis, migraine, and chemotherapy
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) symptoms, such as heartburn, bloating, and early satiety
Delayed gastric emptying (gastroparesis), especially in diabetic patients
Enhancing gastric motility in patients with functional dyspepsia
Infants and children: 0.25–0.5 mg/kg per dose, 3–4 times daily before meals
Adults: 10 mg, 3 times daily before meals
Maximum daily dose: Should not exceed recommended limits as per age and body weight
Shake well before use
Measure dosage using a calibrated measuring spoon or syringe for accuracy
Efodio Suspension should be taken 15–30 minutes before meals to optimize gastrointestinal motility.
Efodio is contraindicated in patients with:
Known hypersensitivity to Domperidone or any excipient
Prolactinoma or pituitary tumor
Severe liver impairment
Gastrointestinal hemorrhage, mechanical obstruction, or perforation
Common side effects include:
Dry mouth
Abdominal cramps or diarrhea
Dizziness or headache
Rarely, galactorrhea, breast tenderness, or menstrual changes due to increased prolactin
Severe adverse effects, such as cardiac arrhythmias, are rare but may occur in patients with existing heart disease or when high doses are administered.
Ketoconazole, erythromycin, or other CYP3A4 inhibitors may increase Domperidone levels, increasing the risk of cardiac side effects
Other QT-prolonging drugs may increase the risk of arrhythmias
Use caution with antihypertensives or dopamine agonists
Pregnancy: Domperidone is generally avoided unless benefits outweigh risks
Lactation: Excreted in breast milk; caution advised for nursing mothers
Monitor for cardiac symptoms, especially in patients with arrhythmias
Use cautiously in renal or hepatic impairment
Long-term use should be avoided unless specifically prescribed
Store below 25°C
Protect from light and moisture
Keep out of reach of children
Efodio enhances gastrointestinal motility by blocking dopamine D2 receptors in the stomach and intestines. By preventing dopamine from inhibiting gastric muscle contractions, it accelerates the movement of food through the digestive tract, relieves bloating, and prevents nausea and vomiting.
