Febustat 40 mg is a prescription medication used for the chronic management of hyperuricemia in patients with gout. It is a non-purine, selective xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitor that works by reducing uric acid production in the body. By lowering serum uric acid levels, Febustat helps prevent the formation of urate crystals, reducing the risk of gout attacks and associated complications.
Febustat 40 mg is not recommended for asymptomatic hyperuricemia and should be used only under medical supervision.

Chronic management of hyperuricemia in patients with gout
Prevention of urate crystal deposition and subsequent gout flares in individuals with elevated uric acid levels
Febustat 40 mg selectively inhibits xanthine oxidase, the enzyme responsible for converting hypoxanthine to xanthine and xanthine to uric acid. Unlike some other urate-lowering agents, Febustat does not interfere with other enzymes involved in purine or pyrimidine metabolism at therapeutic doses, making it highly specific for controlling uric acid levels.
Recommended Dose: 40 mg or 80 mg once daily
Starting Dose: 40 mg once daily
Titration: If serum uric acid remains above 6 mg/dL after 2 weeks, the dose may be increased to 80 mg once daily
Febustat 40 mg can be taken with or without food
Renal and Hepatic Impairment: No dose adjustment required in mild to moderate cases
Administer consistently at the same time each day for optimal effect
Febustat reduces uric acid levels by inhibiting xanthine oxidase, thereby preventing the conversion of hypoxanthine and xanthine into uric acid. This decreases uric acid accumulation, lowering the risk of crystal deposition in joints and soft tissues, which is responsible for gout flares and complications.
Hypersensitivity to Febustat or its components
Concurrent use with azathioprine, mercaptopurine, or theophylline, due to risk of severe toxicity
Azathioprine, mercaptopurine, theophylline: Co-administration may increase plasma levels of these drugs
Febustat should be used cautiously with medications that affect uric acid metabolism
Common adverse reactions include:
Liver enzyme abnormalities (transaminase elevation)
Nausea
Arthralgia (joint pain)
Rash
Precautions:
Monitor for gout flares during initial therapy; prophylactic NSAIDs or colchicine may be considered for up to 6 months
Cardiovascular events: Higher risk of thromboembolic events compared to allopurinol; monitor for MI or stroke
Periodic liver function tests recommended
Doses up to 300 mg daily for 7 days in studies showed no dose-limiting toxicity
Symptomatic and supportive care recommended in case of overdose
Pregnancy Category C: Use only if benefits outweigh risks
Unknown if excreted in breast milk; caution is advised for nursing mothers
Pediatric: Safety and efficacy not established in patients under 18 years
Geriatric: No significant differences observed; monitor for comorbidities
Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture
Keep out of reach of children
Febustat 40 mg is a selective xanthine oxidase inhibitor designed for the chronic management of hyperuricemia in gout patients. By reducing uric acid production, it helps prevent gout flares and urate crystal deposition. Regular monitoring and adherence to dosing instructions ensure safe and effective therapy.
