Sucralfate acts locally on the gastric and duodenal mucosa, forming a protective barrier over damaged tissue and promoting natural healing. Sucralfate is a basic aluminum salt of sucrose sulfate that becomes active in an acidic environment. Upon exposure to gastric acid, it forms a viscous, adhesive complex that binds selectively to ulcerated and inflamed areas of the gastrointestinal mucosa. This protective layer acts as a physical barrier against aggressive factors such as hydrochloric acid, pepsin, and bile salts. In addition, sucralfate enhances mucosal defense by stimulating prostaglandin synthesis, increasing bicarbonate secretion, and improving local blood flow. Systemic absorption is minimal, allowing targeted local action with a favorable safety profile.
