Neofloxin 250 mg Tablet contains ciprofloxacin, a synthetic fluoroquinolone antibiotic with broad-spectrum bactericidal activity. It is widely used for the treatment of a variety of mild to severe infections caused by susceptible gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. Due to its excellent oral absorption, high serum levels, and extensive tissue penetration, Neofloxin 250 mg is effective in managing infections affecting multiple organ systems, including the urinary, respiratory, gastrointestinal, skin, and soft tissues.

Neofloxin 250 mg is particularly useful in treating infections caused by organisms resistant to commonly used antibiotics such as penicillins, cephalosporins, and aminoglycosides. It may be used as monotherapy while awaiting culture and sensitivity results or in combination with other antibiotics in severe or complicated infections, especially in immunocompromised or critically ill patients.

Indications

Neofloxin 250 mg is indicated for the treatment of single or mixed infections caused by sensitive bacteria, including:

• Severe systemic infections: Septicaemia, bacteraemia, peritonitis, infections in immunosuppressed patients, infected burns

• Respiratory tract infections: Lobar pneumonia, bronchopneumonia, acute and chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, empyema, acute exacerbation of cystic fibrosis

• Urinary tract infections: Urethritis, cystitis, pyelonephritis, prostatitis, epididymitis

• Skin and soft tissue infections: Infected ulcers, wound infections, abscesses, cellulitis, erysipelas, otitis externa, infected burns

• Gastrointestinal infections: Enteric fever, infective diarrhea

• Biliary tract infections: Cholangitis, cholecystitis, gall bladder empyema

• Intra-abdominal infections: Peritonitis, intra-abdominal abscess

• Bone and joint infections: Osteomyelitis, septic arthritis

• Pelvic infections: Salpingitis, endometritis, pelvic inflammatory disease

• ENT infections: Otitis media, sinusitis, mastoiditis, tonsillitis

• Gonorrhoea: Urethral, rectal, and pharyngeal gonorrhoea, including beta-lactamase–producing strains

Pharmacology

Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that exerts its bactericidal action by inhibiting bacterial DNA synthesis. It binds to DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. Inhibition of these enzymes leads to rapid bacterial cell death.

Following oral administration, ciprofloxacin is rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and widely distributed into body tissues and fluids. Approximately 30–50% of the administered dose is excreted unchanged in the urine within 24 hours, making Neofloxin 250 mg particularly effective in urinary tract infections. The elimination half-life is approximately 3.5 hours.

Dosage and Administration

The dosage of Neofloxin 250 mg depends on the severity of infection, causative organism, and patient factors.

• Adults: 250–750 mg twice daily depending on infection type and severity

• Urinary tract infections: 250–500 mg twice daily

• Respiratory tract infections: 250–500 mg twice daily

• Gonorrhoea: Single dose of 250–500 mg

The usual treatment duration is 5–10 days, and therapy should continue for at least three days after clinical symptoms resolve. Neofloxin 250 mg may be taken with or without food, but adequate fluid intake is recommended.

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other quinolone antibiotics

Side Effects

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, and fatigue. Less common effects include skin rash, photosensitivity, joint pain, transient elevation of liver enzymes, hypoglycemia, and central nervous system effects such as confusion or seizures.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Neofloxin 250 mg should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit outweighs the risk. As ciprofloxacin is excreted in breast milk and may cause articular damage, its use during lactation is not recommended.
