Ondansetron works by selectively blocking 5-HT3 receptors located in the gastrointestinal tract and the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ) of the brain. During chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or surgical stress, serotonin is released in the gut, which stimulates the vomiting reflex. By inhibiting these receptors, ondansetron effectively prevents the initiation of nausea and vomiting.
