Opton 40 mg contains Esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that effectively reduces gastric acid secretion. It is widely used in the management of acid-related gastrointestinal disorders by providing sustained acid suppression, promoting mucosal healing, and relieving symptoms associated with excessive stomach acid production.

Esomeprazole works by selectively inhibiting the H⁺/K⁺-ATPase enzyme (proton pump) in gastric parietal cells. This action blocks the final step of acid production, resulting in significant and prolonged suppression of gastric acid secretion. As the S-isomer of omeprazole, esomeprazole offers improved pharmacokinetic properties and enhanced acid control compared to racemic PPIs.
Esomeprazole is metabolized primarily by CYP2C19 and CYP3A4 enzymes. It may reduce the absorption of drugs dependent on gastric pH such as ketoconazole, iron salts, and digoxin. Caution is advised when co-administered with diazepam and other CYP2C19 substrates.
Opton 40 mg is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to esomeprazole or any component of the formulation.
