Ulfate contains Sucralfate, a locally acting gastroprotective agent used in the management of acid-related gastrointestinal disorders. It works by forming a protective barrier over ulcerated and inflamed areas of the gastrointestinal mucosa, thereby promoting healing and protecting against further injury from gastric acid, pepsin, and bile salts.

Ulfate is indicated in adults and adolescents over 14 years of age for the treatment of:
Duodenal ulcer
Gastric ulcer
Chronic gastritis
Prophylaxis of gastrointestinal hemorrhage due to stress ulceration
Sucralfate is a non-systemic agent that is minimally absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. The small amount that is absorbed is primarily excreted in the urine. At the site of ulceration, Sucralfate forms a stable chemical complex with proteins in the damaged mucosa, creating a protective barrier. This barrier shields the ulcer from gastric acid, pepsin, and bile, thereby enhancing mucosal defense and promoting ulcer healing.
Duodenal ulcer, gastric ulcer, chronic gastritis: As prescribed by the physician.
Prophylaxis of stress ulceration: As directed by the physician, especially in hospitalized or critically ill patients.
Ulfate should be taken on an empty stomach.
Antacids should not be administered within 30 minutes of taking Ulfate.
Concomitant administration of Ulfate may reduce the bioavailability of several drugs due to binding in the gastrointestinal tract, including:
Fluoroquinolones (e.g., Ciprofloxacin, Norfloxacin)
Tetracycline
Ketoconazole
Sulpiride
Digoxin
Warfarin
Phenytoin
Theophylline
Levothyroxine
Quinidine
H2 receptor antagonists
To minimize interaction, these medications should be administered at least two hours apart from Ulfate.
Ulfate should not be co-administered with citrate preparations, as this may increase aluminum absorption. When used with enteral feeding, administration should be separated by at least one hour.
Ulfate is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Sucralfate or any of its components.

The most commonly reported adverse effects include:
Headache
Nausea
Abdominal pain
Constipation
Diarrhea
Urticaria
Rare cases of bezoar formation have been reported, particularly in severely ill patients or those receiving enteral feeding. Episodes of hyperglycemia have been observed in diabetic patients.
The safety of Sucralfate during pregnancy has not been established. It should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed.
It is not known whether Sucralfate is excreted in human milk; caution is advised when administering to breastfeeding women.
Use with caution in patients with renal dysfunction due to the risk of aluminum accumulation.
Not recommended for patients on dialysis.
Avoid concomitant use with other aluminum-containing medications.
Bezoar formation has been reported, particularly in critically ill patients or those with delayed gastric emptying.
Pediatric: Not recommended in children under 14 years due to insufficient safety data.
Elderly: No dosage adjustment required.
Renal impairment: Use with caution.
Driving and machine operation: Patients should avoid driving if dizziness or drowsiness occurs.
Overdose is generally associated with minimal risk. Most cases are asymptomatic, though abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting may occur. No lethal dose has been identified in animal studies.
