Zoltero Injection 5 mg/100 ml contains Zoledronic Acid, a potent bisphosphonate used primarily for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis. It is administered as an intravenous infusion and is designed to strengthen bones, reduce bone loss, and significantly lower the risk of fractures in patients with reduced bone density.

Zoltero Injection is indicated for:
Treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women
Treatment of osteoporosis in men at increased risk of fracture
Prevention of osteoporosis-related fractures
Management of bone loss associated with long-term glucocorticoid therapy
It is especially beneficial for patients who cannot tolerate oral bisphosphonates or have difficulty adhering to daily or weekly dosing regimens.
Zoledronic Acid works by inhibiting osteoclast-mediated bone resorption. Osteoclasts are the cells responsible for breaking down bone tissue. By suppressing their activity, Zoledronic Acid:
Reduces bone turnover
Increases bone mineral density
Improves bone strength and structural integrity
This targeted action helps maintain a healthy balance between bone formation and bone breakdown, which is crucial in osteoporosis management.
The recommended dose for osteoporosis is 5 mg administered once yearly as a slow intravenous infusion.
The infusion should be given over a minimum recommended time under medical supervision.
Adequate hydration is required before administration.
Patients are usually advised to ensure sufficient intake of calcium and vitamin D before and after treatment to support optimal bone health.
Once-yearly dosing improves patient compliance
Proven reduction in vertebral, hip, and non-vertebral fractures
Effective in increasing bone mineral density
Suitable for patients intolerant to oral bisphosphonates
Long-lasting therapeutic effect with a single infusion
Elderly patients: Can be used with monitoring of renal function
Renal impairment: Not recommended in patients with severe renal dysfunction
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Contraindicated due to potential risk to the fetus or infant
Zoltero Injection should be used cautiously in patients with:
Renal impairment or dehydration
Hypocalcemia (must be corrected before treatment)
History of jaw disorders or invasive dental procedures
A dental examination is recommended prior to initiating therapy, as rare cases of osteonecrosis of the jaw have been reported with bisphosphonate use. Patients should inform their physician about any dental symptoms during treatment.
Commonly reported side effects include:
Fever and flu-like symptoms after infusion
Muscle, joint, or bone pain
Headache
Fatigue
These symptoms are usually mild to moderate and transient, often occurring within the first few days after infusion. Adequate hydration and symptomatic treatment may help reduce discomfort.
