Second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic
Cefaclor Monohydrate acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins within the bacterial cell wall, preventing the formation of peptidoglycan, which is essential for bacterial cell integrity. This disruption leads to weakening of the cell wall, resulting in bacterial lysis and death. Cefaclor demonstrates good activity against many gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and is resistant to certain beta-lactamases.
Alclor Pediatric Drop is intended for oral administration.
The dose is determined by the child’s age, body weight, and severity of infection
The drops should be measured accurately using the provided dropper
Shake well before use
May be given with or without food; administration with food may reduce gastrointestinal upset
It is important to complete the full prescribed course to prevent recurrence and resistance.
Probenecid may increase Cefaclor levels by reducing renal excretion. Concomitant use with anticoagulants may increase bleeding risk. No significant interactions are usually observed with most pediatric medications when used as directed.
Alclor Pediatric Drop 125 mg/1.25 ml is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Cefaclor, other cephalosporins, or any component of the formulation.
Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, and skin rash. Rare but serious adverse effects may include allergic reactions, serum sickness-like reactions, and pseudomembranous colitis.
Caution should be exercised in children with a history of penicillin allergy due to possible cross-reactivity. Patients with gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis, should be monitored closely. Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms.
