Duovas Tablet 5 mg + 20 mg is a fixed-dose combination of Amlodipine Besilate (5 mg) and Olmesartan Medoxomil (20 mg), formulated for the effective management of hypertension (high blood pressure).
This dual-action therapy combines a calcium channel blocker with an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) to provide enhanced blood pressure control compared to monotherapy. Duovas helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications such as stroke, heart attack, and kidney damage, which are commonly associated with uncontrolled hypertension.

Antihypertensive combination therapy
Calcium Channel Blocker + Angiotensin II Receptor Blocker (ARB)
Duovas Tablet works through two complementary mechanisms:
Amlodipine is a long-acting dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker. It inhibits the influx of calcium ions into vascular smooth muscle and cardiac muscle. This results in:
Relaxation of peripheral arteries
Reduction in systemic vascular resistance
Lowered blood pressure
Improved coronary blood flow
Olmesartan is a selective angiotensin II receptor (AT1) blocker. It prevents angiotensin II from binding to its receptors, thereby:
Inhibiting vasoconstriction
Reducing aldosterone secretion
Lowering sodium and water retention
Decreasing blood pressure
Together, these agents provide additive antihypertensive effects, improving blood pressure control with a lower risk of dose-related side effects.
Duovas Tablet 5 mg + 20 mg is indicated for:
Treatment of essential hypertension
Patients whose blood pressure is not adequately controlled with monotherapy
Reduction of cardiovascular risk associated with uncontrolled hypertension
Recommended dose: One tablet once daily or as prescribed by a physician
Can be taken with or without food
Swallow whole with water
Take at the same time each day for optimal blood pressure control
Dosage adjustments may be required based on individual response and tolerability.
Duovas is contraindicated in patients with:
Known hypersensitivity to amlodipine, olmesartan, or any component of the tablet
Severe hepatic impairment
Severe hypotension
Pregnancy
Concomitant use with aliskiren in diabetic patients
Common side effects may include:
Dizziness
Peripheral edema (swelling of ankles/feet)
Headache
Fatigue
Flushing
Nausea
Serious but rare side effects:
Hypotension
Hyperkalemia
Renal impairment
Allergic reactions
Use caution with other antihypertensive agents (risk of additive hypotension)
Potassium supplements or potassium-sparing diuretics may increase risk of hyperkalemia
NSAIDs may reduce antihypertensive effect
Lithium levels may increase when used with ARBs
Monitor blood pressure regularly
Use cautiously in patients with renal artery stenosis, renal impairment, or liver disease
Risk of symptomatic hypotension in volume-depleted patients
Monitor serum potassium levels during therapy
Contraindicated in pregnancy due to risk of fetal injury
Not recommended during breastfeeding
Store below 30°C
Protect from light and moisture
Keep out of reach of children
Duovas combines arterial vasodilation (Amlodipine) with angiotensin II blockade (Olmesartan), resulting in effective blood pressure reduction, improved vascular function, and reduced cardiovascular risk.
