Famomax Tablet 20 mg contains Famotidine, a well-established histamine H₂-receptor antagonist used for the treatment and prevention of acid-related gastrointestinal disorders. It effectively reduces gastric acid secretion, thereby providing relief from symptoms associated with excessive stomach acid such as heartburn, indigestion, acid reflux, and epigastric pain. Famomax Tablet is widely prescribed due to its proven efficacy, good safety profile, and suitability for both short-term and long-term management of acid-peptic diseases.
By decreasing acid production, Famomax Tablet promotes healing of acid-damaged tissues and prevents recurrence of ulcers and reflux-related complications. It is suitable for adults and is often used when lifestyle modification and antacids alone are insufficient.

Each tablet contains:
Famotidine 20 mg
Therapeutic Class:
H₂-receptor antagonist (Anti-ulcerant)
Famomax Tablet 20 mg is indicated for the treatment and prevention of:
Duodenal ulcer
Benign gastric ulcer
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
Zollinger–Ellison syndrome and other pathological hypersecretory conditions
Symptomatic relief of heartburn and acid indigestion
Prevention of ulcer recurrence
It is also used for acid suppression in hospitalized patients when oral therapy is appropriate.
Famotidine competitively inhibits histamine at H₂-receptors of the gastric parietal cells. This action results in reduced basal and stimulated secretion of gastric acid, as well as a decrease in gastric volume and hydrogen ion concentration. Famotidine suppresses acid secretion stimulated by food, histamine, gastrin, and pentagastrin.
Compared to earlier H₂-receptor antagonists, Famotidine is more potent and has a longer duration of action, allowing for convenient once- or twice-daily dosing. It has minimal effect on gastric motility, pancreatic secretion, and serum prolactin levels. Famotidine does not significantly interfere with cytochrome P450 enzymes, reducing the risk of clinically relevant drug interactions.

Dosage should be individualized based on the condition being treated:
Duodenal ulcer: 40 mg once daily at bedtime or 20 mg twice daily
Gastric ulcer: 40 mg once daily at bedtime
GERD: 20 mg twice daily
Hypersecretory conditions: Initial dose 20 mg every 6 hours, adjusted as needed
Famomax Tablet may be taken with or without food. Dose adjustment is required in patients with severe renal impairment.
Famotidine has a low potential for drug interactions. However:
Antacids may reduce the absorption of Famotidine if taken simultaneously
Drugs requiring an acidic gastric environment for absorption may have reduced bioavailability
Patients should consult a healthcare professional before combining medications.
Famomax Tablet is contraindicated in patients with:
Known hypersensitivity to Famotidine or other H₂-receptor antagonists
History of allergic reactions to any component of the formulation
Famomax Tablet is generally well tolerated. Common side effects may include:
Headache
Dizziness
Constipation or diarrhea
Rare side effects include confusion (especially in elderly or critically ill patients), skin rash, fatigue, and elevated liver enzymes.
Famotidine crosses the placenta and is excreted in breast milk. It should be used during pregnancy and lactation only if clearly needed and prescribed by a physician after assessing the benefit-risk ratio.
Gastric malignancy should be excluded before initiating therapy for ulcers
Use with caution in patients with renal impairment
Elderly patients may be more sensitive to CNS effects
