Megatrim Suspension is a widely used oral antibiotic formulation containing a fixed-dose combination of Sulphamethoxazole (200 mg) and Trimethoprim (40 mg) per 5 ml. This combination is commonly known as co-trimoxazole and is effective against a broad range of bacterial infections in both children and adults. Megatrim Suspension is especially suitable for pediatric patients due to its liquid formulation, which allows accurate dose adjustment and easy administration.

Per 5 ml oral suspension
Combination antibacterial (Sulfonamide + Folate synthesis inhibitor)
Megatrim Suspension works by inhibiting two consecutive steps in the bacterial folic acid synthesis pathway. Sulphamethoxazole blocks the incorporation of para-aminobenzoic acid into dihydrofolic acid, while Trimethoprim inhibits the reduction of dihydrofolic acid to tetrahydrofolic acid. This dual mechanism results in a synergistic bactericidal effect, effectively stopping bacterial growth and replication.
Megatrim Suspension is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible organisms, including:
Respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia
Urinary tract infections
Gastrointestinal infections including traveler’s diarrhea
Ear infections (otitis media)
Skin and soft tissue infections
Certain types of bacterial dysentery
Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (as per physician guidance)
The dosage of Megatrim Suspension depends on the patient’s age, body weight, severity of infection, and renal function. It should be taken as prescribed by a registered medical practitioner. The suspension should be shaken well before use to ensure uniform distribution of the active ingredients. Completing the full course of therapy is essential to prevent antibiotic resistance.
Megatrim Suspension is commonly prescribed in pediatric practice due to its palatable liquid form and reliable efficacy. Accurate measurement using a proper dosing spoon or cup is recommended.
Use with caution in patients with liver or kidney impairment
Not recommended in patients with known hypersensitivity to sulfonamides or trimethoprim
Adequate hydration should be maintained during therapy
Long-term use may require monitoring of blood counts
Should be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding only if clearly needed and prescribed by a physician
Some patients may experience mild side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or skin rash. Rare but serious reactions include hypersensitivity reactions, blood disorders, or liver dysfunction. Patients should seek medical advice if any unusual symptoms occur.
Store Megatrim Suspension in a cool, dry place away from direct light. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date mentioned on the label.
