Omastin Injection 200 mg/100 ml contains Fluconazole, a broad-spectrum triazole antifungal agent used for the treatment and prevention of a wide variety of fungal infections. It is especially effective against Candida and Cryptococcus species and is widely used in hospitalized patients, critically ill individuals, and immunocompromised patients who require intravenous antifungal therapy.

Fluconazole works by inhibiting fungal cytochrome P-450–dependent enzymes that are essential for the synthesis of ergosterol, a vital component of the fungal cell membrane. Disruption of ergosterol synthesis leads to increased membrane permeability, impaired fungal cell growth, and ultimately fungal cell death. Due to its selective action on fungal enzymes, Omastin Injection offers effective antifungal activity with comparatively low toxicity to human cells.

Omastin Injection is indicated for the treatment of systemic and invasive fungal infections, including candidaemia, disseminated candidiasis, and infections involving the lungs, urinary tract, peritoneum, and endocardium. It is also highly effective in the management of cryptococcal meningitis and other forms of cryptococcosis, particularly in patients with AIDS, malignancy, or those undergoing organ transplantation.

In addition, Omastin Injection is used for the treatment of mucosal candidiasis, such as oropharyngeal and oesophageal candidiasis, especially in patients unable to take oral medication. It is also prescribed as prophylaxis to prevent fungal infections in patients with severe neutropenia following cytotoxic chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or bone marrow transplantation.

The intravenous formulation ensures rapid and reliable drug delivery, making Omastin Injection particularly suitable for patients with severe infections, gastrointestinal intolerance, or impaired oral absorption. Fluconazole demonstrates excellent tissue penetration, including cerebrospinal fluid, which makes it a drug of choice for central nervous system fungal infections.

Pharmacology

Fluconazole is a triazole antifungal agent that selectively inhibits fungal cytochrome P-450 enzymes required for ergosterol synthesis. This results in disruption of fungal cell membrane integrity and inhibition of fungal growth. Following intravenous administration, fluconazole shows predictable pharmacokinetics, low protein binding, and high bioavailability.

Dosage and Administration

Omastin Injection is administered by intravenous infusion. Dosage and duration depend on the type and severity of infection, patient age, immune status, and renal function. Dose adjustments may be required in patients with renal impairment. Administration should be guided by a physician.

Side Effects

Omastin Injection is generally well tolerated. Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, diarrhoea, headache, and skin rash. Rarely, elevated liver enzymes and hypersensitivity reactions may occur, particularly with prolonged use.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Fluconazole should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the possible risk to the fetus. As fluconazole is excreted in breast milk, caution is advised when administered to nursing mothers.
