Indications

Prosulf Injection is indicated for:

Mechanism of Action

Protamine sulfate is a strongly basic (positively charged) protein that binds to negatively charged heparin molecules. When administered intravenously, it forms a stable inactive complex with heparin, thereby neutralizing its anticoagulant activity.

The onset of action is rapid, usually within 5 minutes of IV administration. The neutralizing effect depends on the amount of heparin present in the body.

Dosage and Administration

• Administered by slow intravenous injection or infusion only.

• Dosage depends on:

  • The amount of heparin administered

  • Time elapsed since heparin administration

  • Patient’s coagulation status

A common guideline:

• 1 mg of protamine sulfate neutralizes approximately 100 units of heparin (depending on timing).
