Tulos Oral Solution 3.35 gm/5 ml contains Lactulose, a synthetic disaccharide widely used as an osmotic laxative. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of constipation and for the management of hepatic encephalopathy, a serious complication of liver disease. Lactulose is a well-established and clinically proven therapy that works gently and effectively to promote regular bowel movements and reduce ammonia levels in the blood.
Tulos Oral Solution is formulated as a sweet, palatable liquid, making it suitable for adults, elderly patients, and children (as prescribed). Its liquid dosage form allows for flexible dosing according to individual patient needs.

Each 5 ml of Tulos Oral Solution contains:
Lactulose 3.35 gm
The solution may also contain suitable excipients to maintain stability and taste.
Lactulose works through a unique mechanism in the colon:
Osmotic Effect: Lactulose is not absorbed in the small intestine. It reaches the colon unchanged, where it is metabolized by gut bacteria into organic acids. These acids increase osmotic pressure, drawing water into the bowel.
Stool Softening: Increased water content softens stool and stimulates bowel movements.
Ammonia Reduction: In hepatic encephalopathy, lactulose acidifies the colon, converting ammonia (NH₃) into ammonium (NH₄⁺), which cannot be absorbed into the bloodstream. This helps lower blood ammonia levels and improves neurological symptoms.
This dual action makes lactulose effective for both gastrointestinal and liver-related conditions.
Tulos Oral Solution is indicated for:
Chronic constipation
Acute constipation
Hepatic encephalopathy (including prevention and treatment of portal-systemic encephalopathy)
Regulation of bowel habits in patients requiring soft stools (e.g., after surgery or in hemorrhoids)
For Constipation:
Adults: Usually 15–30 ml daily, adjusted according to response
Children: Dosage as prescribed by a physician
The dose may be taken once daily or divided into two doses
For Hepatic Encephalopathy:
Higher doses may be prescribed, typically 30–45 ml three to four times daily
The goal is to produce 2–3 soft stools per day
The solution may be taken with water, juice, or milk to improve palatability. Effects are usually seen within 24–48 hours.
Use cautiously in patients with diabetes, as lactulose contains sugars
Not recommended in cases of intestinal obstruction
Prolonged excessive use may cause electrolyte imbalance
Ensure adequate fluid intake during therapy
Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding only under medical supervision
Tulos Oral Solution is generally safe and well tolerated. Common side effects may include:
Bloating
Flatulence
Abdominal cramps
Diarrhea (if dosage is excessive)
In hepatic encephalopathy treatment, diarrhea may indicate overdosage and requires dose adjustment.
Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep the bottle tightly closed and out of reach of children.
Tulos Oral Solution 3.35 gm/5 ml (Lactulose) is a safe and effective osmotic laxative widely used for constipation and hepatic encephalopathy. Its gentle action, flexible dosing, and proven clinical benefits make it a trusted option for maintaining bowel regularity and supporting liver-related ammonia control.
