Viscocid Chewable Tablet works through a physical, non-systemic mechanism. After chewing and swallowing, sodium alginate reacts with gastric acid to form a thick, viscous gel. Potassium bicarbonate releases carbon dioxide in the acidic environment of the stomach, which becomes trapped in the alginate gel, allowing it to float on top of the stomach contents.

This floating gel, known as a raft, forms a protective barrier at the gastroesophageal junction. The raft prevents the backflow of acidic stomach contents into the esophagus, thereby relieving symptoms of reflux, heartburn, and regurgitation. Unlike traditional antacids, Viscocid Chewable Tablet does not primarily neutralize stomach acid but works mechanically to prevent acid reflux.

Indications

Viscocid Chewable Tablet is indicated for the relief of symptoms associated with:

• Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

• Heartburn

• Acid indigestion

• Acid regurgitation

• Postprandial gastric discomfort

• Reflux symptoms occurring during pregnancy, under medical supervision

Dosage and Administration

• Adults and elderly: 1–2 chewable tablets after meals and at bedtime, or as directed by a physician

• Children: Dosage should be determined by a physician

Tablets should be chewed thoroughly before swallowing to ensure optimal effectiveness.

Drug Interactions

Viscocid Chewable Tablet may interfere with the absorption of certain oral medications if taken at the same time. A minimum interval of 2 hours is recommended between Viscocid Chewable Tablet and other oral medicines.

Contraindications

Viscocid Chewable Tablet is contraindicated in patients with:

• Known hypersensitivity to sodium alginate, potassium bicarbonate, or any of the excipients

• Conditions requiring strict sodium or potassium restriction, unless advised by a physician

Side Effects

Viscocid Chewable Tablet is generally well tolerated. Rarely, some patients may experience:

• Mild bloating

• Nausea

• Flatulence

These side effects are usually mild and transient.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Viscocid Chewable Tablet is considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding when used as recommended. However, it should always be taken under medical advice during pregnancy.

Precautions and Warnings

• Use cautiously in patients with renal impairment or electrolyte imbalance

• Patients on a restricted sodium or potassium diet should consult a physician before use

• Prolonged or excessive use without medical supervision is not recommended

Overdose

Overdose is unlikely. Excessive intake may cause gastrointestinal discomfort or electrolyte disturbances. Management is symptomatic.
