Alphin DS 400 mg is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic used for the treatment of a wide range of parasitic worm infestations. It is effective against both single and mixed infections caused by intestinal worms, including hookworm, roundworm, threadworm, whipworm, strongyloides, tapeworms, and hydatid disease. Alphin DS 400 mg is also used in the management of giardiasis and other systemic parasitic infections. Its vermicidal, ovicidal, and larvicidal properties make it a versatile treatment for both pediatric and adult patients under medical supervision.

Anthelmintic
Alphin DS 400 mg is a benzimidazole derivative with broad-spectrum anthelmintic activity. It works by inhibiting tubulin polymerization in parasitic worms, disrupting glucose uptake, and depleting the parasite’s energy stores. This leads to immobilization and eventual death of the parasite. The drug exhibits ovicidal and larvicidal activity, effectively targeting multiple stages of the parasite life cycle.
Alphin DS 400 mg is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract but undergoes extensive first-pass metabolism in the liver. Its main metabolite, albendazole sulphoxide, retains anthelmintic activity with a plasma half-life of approximately 8.5 hours and is primarily excreted via urine.
Adults and children over 2 years:
400 mg (1 tablet or 10 ml suspension) as a single dose for intestinal worms (Enterobius, Trichuris, Ascaris, Ancylostoma, Necator)
For strongyloidiasis or taeniasis: 400 mg daily for 3 consecutive days
If not cured after 3 weeks, a second course may be administered
Children 1–2 years:
Single dose of 200 mg (5 ml suspension)
Children under 1 year:
Not recommended
Hydatid Disease (Echinococcosis):
60 kg: 400 mg twice daily for 28 days
<60 kg: 15 mg/kg daily in two divided doses (max 800 mg/day)
Treatment cycles: cystic echinococcosis may require 3 cycles; alveolar echinococcosis may require prolonged cycles
Giardiasis:
400 mg once daily for 5 days
Dosage should be adjusted according to body weight and medical guidance.
No significant pharmacokinetic or pharmacodynamic interactions reported.
Neonates and children under 1 year
Pregnant or suspected pregnant women (Pregnancy Category C)
Hypersensitivity to albendazole or components of the formulation
Common:
Gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, abdominal pain)
Headache, dizziness
Mild changes in liver enzymes
Rare:
Reversible alopecia
Rash, fever
Blood disorders (leukopenia, pancytopenia)
Allergic reactions if cyst leakage occurs
Convulsions or meningism in cerebral disease
Baseline blood counts and liver function tests before treatment, repeated during therapy
Monitor serum transaminases, leukocyte, and platelet counts during prolonged therapy
Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless benefit outweighs risk
Store in a dry place, protected from light and heat.
Keep out of reach of children.
Alphin DS 400 mg blocks glucose uptake in parasitic worms and inhibits tubulin polymerization, leading to energy depletion, immobilization, and death of the parasite. Its metabolite, albendazole sulphoxide, also contributes to anthelmintic activity.
