Avlotrin DS Tablet is a double-strength (DS) combination antibiotic containing Sulphamethoxazole and Trimethoprim. This well-established formulation, commonly known as co-trimoxazole, is widely used for the treatment of various bacterial infections. The dual-action formula enhances antibacterial effectiveness by targeting two sequential steps in bacterial folic acid synthesis.

This combination provides broad-spectrum coverage against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms and is particularly useful in treating moderate to severe infections.

Indications

Avlotrin DS Tablet is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including:

• Respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia
• Urinary tract infections (UTIs) including cystitis and pyelonephritis
• Gastrointestinal infections such as shigellosis and traveler’s diarrhea
• Skin and soft tissue infections
• Ear infections (otitis media)
• Treatment and prevention of Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PCP)

Composition

• Active Ingredients:
  • Sulphamethoxazole – 800 mg
  • Trimethoprim – 160 mg
• Dosage Form: Oral tablet (Double Strength)

Mechanism of Action

Avlotrin DS Tablet works through a synergistic mechanism:

• Sulphamethoxazole inhibits the synthesis of dihydrofolic acid by competing with para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA)
• Trimethoprim inhibits dihydrofolate reductase, preventing the formation of tetrahydrofolic acid

This sequential inhibition disrupts bacterial DNA synthesis, leading to a bactericidal effect and effective eradication of infection-causing organisms.

Dosage & Administration
