Avlotrin DS Tablet is a double-strength (DS) combination antibiotic containing Sulphamethoxazole and Trimethoprim. This well-established formulation, commonly known as co-trimoxazole, is widely used for the treatment of various bacterial infections. The dual-action formula enhances antibacterial effectiveness by targeting two sequential steps in bacterial folic acid synthesis.
This combination provides broad-spectrum coverage against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms and is particularly useful in treating moderate to severe infections.

Mechanism of Action
Avlotrin DS Tablet works through a synergistic mechanism:
-
Sulphamethoxazole inhibits the synthesis of dihydrofolic acid by competing with para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA)
-
Trimethoprim inhibits dihydrofolate reductase, preventing the formation of tetrahydrofolic acid
This sequential inhibition disrupts bacterial DNA synthesis, leading to a bactericidal effect and effective eradication of infection-causing organisms.
