This combination is commonly known as co-trimoxazole and is widely used in pediatric and adult patients due to its broad-spectrum antibacterial activity.

The suspension form ensures easy administration, especially for children and patients who have difficulty swallowing tablets. By targeting two different steps in bacterial folic acid synthesis, this combination enhances antibacterial effectiveness and reduces the risk of resistance.

Indications

Avlotrin Suspension is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible microorganisms, including:

• Respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia
• Urinary tract infections (UTIs) including cystitis and pyelonephritis
• Gastrointestinal infections such as shigellosis and traveler’s diarrhea
• Ear infections (otitis media)
• Skin and soft tissue infections
• Certain opportunistic infections such as Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PCP)

Composition

• Active Ingredients:
  • Sulphamethoxazole – 200 mg
  • Trimethoprim – 40 mg
• Dosage Form: Oral suspension (per 5 ml)

Mechanism of Action

Avlotrin Suspension works through a dual mechanism:

• Sulphamethoxazole inhibits the synthesis of dihydrofolic acid by competing with para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA)
• Trimethoprim inhibits dihydrofolate reductase, preventing the conversion to tetrahydrofolic acid

This sequential blockade of folic acid synthesis results in a bactericidal effect, effectively stopping bacterial growth and survival.

Dosage & Administration
