Pharmacology

Ciprofloxacin is a synthetic fluoroquinolone with potent bactericidal activity. It works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This inhibition leads to rapid bacterial cell death. Ciprofloxacin demonstrates excellent tissue penetration and achieves therapeutic concentrations in body fluids, tissues, and urine, making it highly effective for systemic as well as localized infections.

Indications

Neofloxin Suspension 250 mg/5 ml is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible organisms, including:

• Respiratory tract infections: Acute and chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, bronchiectasis

• Urinary tract infections: Cystitis, pyelonephritis, urethritis

• Gastrointestinal infections: Infective diarrhea, enteric fever

• Skin and soft tissue infections: Wound infections, abscesses, cellulitis, infected burns

• Bone and joint infections: Osteomyelitis, septic arthritis

• Ear, nose, and throat infections: Otitis media, sinusitis

• Other systemic infections: Septicaemia, intra-abdominal infections

It may be used alone or in combination with other antibiotics in severe or mixed infections.

Dosage and Administration

The dosage of Neofloxin Suspension depends on the type and severity of infection, patient age, body weight, and renal function.

• Children (when benefit outweighs risk):
  7.5–15 mg/kg/day, divided into two doses

• Administration:
  Shake the bottle well before each use. Measure the dose accurately using a calibrated measuring spoon or cup. The suspension may be taken with or without food, but adequate fluid intake is recommended.

Duration of therapy should be determined by clinical response and should generally continue for at least 2–3 days after symptoms have resolved.

Drug Interactions

Concomitant use with antacids or supplements containing magnesium, aluminum, calcium, iron, or zinc may reduce absorption. These products should be taken at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after Neofloxin Suspension. Avoid taking with milk or dairy products alone.

Contraindications

Neofloxin Suspension is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other quinolone antibiotics.

Side Effects

Most adverse effects are mild and transient. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, headache, dizziness, and rash. Rare but serious effects may include tendon disorders, CNS effects, and hypersensitivity reactions.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Ciprofloxacin should be used during pregnancy only if clearly necessary. It is excreted in breast milk; therefore, use during lactation is not recommended due to potential risk to the infant.
